I've been tossing around the idea of taking one or two nights a month, either on a Tues or Thurs, and concentrating on some type of self defense theme. Grappling and applying techniques with street clothes on (no shoes of course), striking, firearms/weapons disarms and retention, as well as discussion on dealing with law enforcement once they arrive on the scene.

The goal would be to prepare ourselves for situations such as these, which are becoming for too prevalent:

Please post up if you would be interested or have thoughts/suggestions on how best to go about it.

Thanks, Gil

I think its a good idea. I was thinking the other day, what would I do if someone pulled a gun or knife on me, and I really didn't have a good answer. So thats something I would be interested in.

I support this idea...who will wear the big suit that I get to yell "NO!" at while kicking low and poking in the eyes, then armdragging?

just kidding, I support this idea

I'd be down for some striking like we used to do back when Paul was around. A month or two ago I was looking around for a local boxing gym (just to mix things up a little) but had no luck. So if we can throw them thangs a couple nights a month that would be cool.

I am down for everything mentioned here Tues. & Thurs nights. I usually try to stay tuned, just need about an hour notice, and I'm there.
See y'all in the morning or next week.

damn fine point sensei, just saying that I am basically down any given Tues/Thurs night as long as I know well enough in advance to make the trip. No excuses for missing Mon. & Fri. classes, working Wed. and late weekends (hence the late nite post)

I'd love to do some striking, I've trained it somewhat before so I could help instruct if ya want Gil. I'd be in for the self-defense to expand on the beginning of Wed classes, never know what you're gonna need it (especially w Twitch around....).

Seems like there is a pretty good interest in this. Lets shoot for this Thursday as a trial run and look at doing some street/self defense topic the last Thursday of every month. I think it would be great if we could use the expertise available within the group to touch on different topics. Nick has already volunteered to help with the striking training. If anyone else can think of a topic they would like to lead or help with just chime in.

I think this Thursday I can make it out by 6pm. If you are coming out please bring an extra set of street clothes you don't mind stretching/ripping and make sure there are minimal metal zippers/buttons exposed for your safety. We are going to be training to use shirts/hoodies/jackets in lieu of the Gi to set up sweeps and attacks. Keep in mind, well run with this for about 40-60 min. and then everyone will be free to don their regular grappling attire at that point and practice as usual.

How does that sound to everyone?

I'm going to need another week of healing before getting into it, but count me in for 8/5 and forward.

I have a pair of 7oz Combat Sports gloves that are in good condition, they're just kinda small for me so I'm gonna buy new ones (thanks for the heads up on the Everlast gear Gil!). $20 to the first taker, I'll keep them in my bag to try on til someone gets them.
